In fact, recent research has found that adult and teen brains work differently. The rational part of a teen’s brain isn’t fully developed and won’t be until age 25 or so. ![]() Although the human brain matures in size during adolescence, important developments within the prefrontal cortex and other regions still take place well into one’s 20s. Research suggests that most human brains take about 25 years to develop, though these rates can vary among men and women, and among individuals. The frontal lobes, home to key components of the neural circuitry underlying “executive functions” such as planning, working memory, and impulse control, are among the last areas of the brain to mature they may not be fully developed until halfway through the third decade of life.
